I've been wandering 'round
But I still come back to you...
Whenever this world is cruel to me,
I got you to help me forgive.
You're My Best Friend

Behind the scenes

[At Methos' apartment. Amanda is banging on the door.]

Amanda: Methos. Open the door. I know you're there. Methos! Methos, it's Amanda.

Methos: [opens door] Do you want to knock a bit louder? I don't think they heard you in Philadelphia.

Amanda: I'm sorry. It was an emergency, okay?

Methos: No, it was a good way to get your head cut off is what it was.

Amanda: You're turning into an old grouch, aren't you? Or did I interrupt something important?

Methos: Amanda, it is the middle of the night and I wasn't expecting anyone. Give me a minute. You want some coffee?

Amanda: Yeah.

[Still at Methos' apartment.]

Amanda: All right, so tell me what you know about this Keane guy.

Methos: Nothing. Never met him.

Amanda: Wait a minute. I thought the Watchers knew everything.

Methos: Well, I've done with the Watchers.

Amanda: Really? I thought you found the perfect hiding place.

Methos: Well, I changed my mind. Sorry, can't help. [Stands on bed, shakes out covers and then lies down under them.]

Amanda: No. No, listen, Methos. Why don't you just talk to MacLeod. You know, try to convince him Keane is wrong about him.

Methos: [sigh] You want me to talk to MacLeod and tell him "Stop worrying. You're not a bad guy"?

Amanda: Yeah.

Methos: Trust me, Amanda, that's not gonna work. [Rolls over and buries head in pillow.]

Amanda: Look... no, Methos.

[Methos looks up.]

Amanda: You have to do something. I've never seen him this upset before, and you know how guilt-ridden he can be.

[Methos sits up.]

Amanda: Look, if he goes up against Keane thinking he deserves to lose, he'll lose. He'll die, Methos.

Despite copious drooling over Methos' blue boxers, they actually were just plain white. It was the lighting that made them appear blue.

[Methos yawns.]

[Luxembourg Gardens, around 6 a.m.]

Methos: So, nice day for it. Oh, not too cold. The ground's nice and dry.

Duncan: Amanda's got a big mouth.

Methos: Well, she's worried about you.

Duncan: Yeah? And you?

Methos: Oh me, no. Just scholarly interest. I just came by to watch the perfect Immortal die.

Duncan: I'm not—

Methos: Not what? Not the perfect Immortal or not going to die?

Duncan: Go away.

Methos: We're none of us perfect, MacLeod. Not you. Not me. Not even Darius. I'm sure not your friend Stephen Keane.

Duncan: You should write fortune cookies.

Methos: Yeah, well, maybe I should. Just so long as I am not writing your epitaph. Well, Keane hates you for what happened. Nothing you do is going to change that. You accept it, MacLeod. It's part of who you are.

Duncan: Are we talking about me now?

Methos: Yes. Do you remember what happened after Culloden?

Duncan: Yeah. I went after innocent men and slaughtered them.

Methos: No, that's how Keane tells it. I want to know how you remember it. 'Cause they weren't innocent, were they? They were murderers. They were the English bastards who destroyed your people, and they deserved to die, all of them.

Duncan: You're sure all of them did.

Methos: Well, you were. You wanted to kill, you killed them. You know, Keane is just like you. He wants to divide the world up into good and bad. Well, it's not that simple. We are all both — good and evil. We have rage and compassion. We have love and hate. Murder and forgiveness. Why don't you try forgiving yourself for once?

Duncan: Why don't you try minding your own business — for once, hm? Tell Amanda to do the same.

[Resigned, Methos steps aside to let Duncan pass.]

Methos: She can't say I didn't try.

On the Highlander blooper reel, this is where Peter Wingfield comes out with the great line: "Then we get our own show!"
This scene wasn't filmed in Luxembourg Gardens — Highlander has never actually filmed in Luxembourg Gardens!

[Duncan turns his back and walks away. Methos shoots him in the back.]

Methos: You are SUCH a pain in the ass.

[Still at Luxembourg Gardens.]

Keane: I don't think we've met. Steven Keane.

Methos: So I heard. [Draws sword.]

Keane: I have no fight with you.

Methos: No, that's true if you leave Paris and leave Duncan MacLeod alone.

Keane: The guy's got a lot of friends.

Methos: Good men often do.

Keane: Good man? You must not know him very well.

Methos: You would be surprised, Keane. Let him be.

Keane: You try and stop me and I'll start with you.

Methos: [sigh] Your call!

[Sword fight. Methos ends it by pulling a knife and stabbing Keane in the gut as he's about to swing at Methos' head.]

Keane: You bastard.

Methos: Sticks and stones... [Lifts sword to behead Keane.]

Duncan: You do it and I'm next.

Methos: [slumps] I'm trying to save your head.

Duncan: I don't need your help! You kill him, I swear, Methos, you face me.

Methos: [disbelieving laugh] Fine! It's your funeral.

[Inside the barge. Keane is waiting, sword in hand. He senses a buzz.]

Keane: [mutters] Ah, there you are.

[Methos enters.]

Methos: Mac— [Sees Keane, who gets up and points his sword at Methos.]

Keane: Where's MacLeod?

Methos: I thought he'd be here. Do you mind putting that down, or were you planning to use it?

Keane: What makes you think I won't?

Methos: I'm a student of human nature.

[Keane puts his sword to Methos' throat.]

Keane: Tell me where to find MacLeod.

Methos: I don't know.

[Keane pushes past Methos and walks out.]

Methos: I love good guys.

[At Methos' apartment.]

Amanda: That son of a bitch. That double-dealing swine. You know there are cops all over my house? He even gave up my secret stash of rainy day jewels. Well, one of 'em.

Methos: [pouring wine] Amanda, what did you expect? You got him sent to prison. You think he's just going to sit there and take it?

Amanda: I was trying to keep him alive and he turned on me.

Methos: Correct me if I misunderstood, but this was after you framed him, wasn't it? Have a drink. You'll feel better.

Amanda: You know, I was ratted out by my very best friend.

Methos: Well, I know how that feels. [Clinks glasses.]

Amanda: Methos, I was just trying to help him, you know. I didn't care how mad he got at me as long as it kept him alive.

Methos: Look, you did your best, okay? So did I. Now it's up to him. He's lived a long time, Amanda. It's not all luck.

Amanda: Yeah, but it's not all skill either. He's gone up against some Immortals older than him, some better than him, and he's always won. You know why? Because he doesn't give up — not when he thinks he's right.

Methos: No, which can be bloody annoying, as we both know.

Amanda: You know, there's something different this time. His heart's just not in it.

[Inside the barge.]

Duncan: You really thought I'd lose?

Methos: Yeah. And you didn't?

Duncan: It wasn't about that. You guys still don't get it, do you?

Methos: No.

Duncan: I had to take responsibility for what I'd done. Nothing you two could do was ever going to solve it for me. I had to face him and fight the best fight of my life knowing he'd do the same. It's just the Fates that decide the winner.

Methos: Trial by combat. Whoever survives is proved right in the eyes of the law.

Duncan: Bright boy.

Amanda: But what if he comes after you again?

Duncan: He won't.

Amanda: How do you know that?

Duncan: Because I wouldn't.

Amanda: Well, he's not you.

In the script, Methos was supposed to club Duncan unconscious but Highlander swordmaster F. Braun McAsh felt that Methos would have to keep Duncan knocked out until the sword fight was done, so he changed it to a shooting.
(Methinks a gun is more Methos anyway — Methos tends to prefer whatever takes the least effort instead of brute force! However, why didn't he just shoot Keane instead of pulling a dagger? Both equally cunning and sneaky ways of winning the fight.)
Michael Praed was supposed to be cast as Stephen Keane but that fell through.
Michael was aslo originally supposed to be cast as Robert de Valicourt, with his real-life wife as Gina in "Till Death"

Duncan: He's not that different. None of us are. We all make mistakes.

Methos: And we all have mistakes to forgive.

Amanda: Speaking of mistakes, there seems to be an inspector who is determined to put my cute little butt in jail. [Sits in Duncan's lap.]

Duncan: [laughs] Sorry about that.

Amanda: [giggle] She won't forgive me?

Duncan: Oh no, I don't think she should.

Methos: I think this is my cue to leave.

Amanda: Bye Methos.

Duncan: Bye Methos.

Methos: You guys be good.

Duncan: If not, we'll try to be better.

Additions and corrections: Chaja.
The final scene in this episode was supposed to resolve the "Horseman/Revelation" story arc. A look was supposed to pass between Duncan and Methos to show them being at ease with each other again.
However, Adrian and Peter felt it was still too soon and also that Duncan would never forget that Methos was a part of the Horsemen — it will always be between them to some extent. So Adrian and Peter changed the dialogue and body language to show more uneasiness than the writers intended.
